FUR TRADE AT LACHINE NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE OF CANADA Less than half an hour from downtown Montreal , bordering the charming Lake Saint-Louis, is the Fur Trade at Lachine National Historic Site. Built in 1803, the former stone-clad warehouse is the only remaining symbol of the city’s glorious fur-trading days at the turn of the 19th century. Today, it houses an interesting interactive museum. Step back into the past as you observe trade goods and a superb birchbark canoe, and smell the distinctive odour of animal pelts. Native trappers, French Canadian travellers, and Scottish merchants come to life as in the days when the fur trade was the driving force of the country’s economy. The film Pitcipon shows an ancestral beaver-trapping technique. |
